Historical
Living Legends - where the field meets the forest
Living Legends is a community conservation project which celebrates and combines rugby heritage and conservation. It was organised in conjunction with the Rugby World Cup 2011 as part of its environmental sustainability programme. Living Legends is managed by Project Crimson in partnership with DoC, The Tindall Foundation and Meridian Energy. In September and October 2011 New Zealanders and international visitors got the chance to take part in 18 community planting events throughout the country on public conservation land. Eighteen rugby legends were selected by New Zealand's provinical rugby unions, and a planting event was dedicated to each of them. Almost 85,000 trees were planted, and Living Legends is making a five year investment to plant a total of 170,000 trees by the end of the project in 2015. Maintenance and protection of the plants will continue for years to come.
The Taranaki-Wanganui planting event was held in a back dune area just north of Te Rewa Rewa Bridge on the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway . It was chosen for several reasons; it attracts both local and visitor communities to use and enjoy the foreshore area, it is administered by the Te Rewa Rewa Management Committee which is a partnership between the Ngati Tawhirikura Hapu of Te Atiawa and the New Plymouth District Council, and the planting will enhance wildlife habitat and provide a significant area of indigenous vegetation. On the 17th of September 2011 400 volunteers turned out to plant the trees and honour Taranaki rugby legend Ian Ellison. Stage Two of the planting will occur during winter 2012 with the support of the Taranaki Tree Trust.
The Herekawe Stream Walkway Project
The Herekawe Stream Walkway Project was initiated in 2002 with the aims to; establish an all-weather walkway along the Herekawe Stream to link inland residential areas with the coast, re-establish natural habitat through the planting of native trees, and provide a recreational facility for the Taranaki community.
The key partners in the project were Dow Agrosciences, Methanex Limited, Shell Todd Oil Services, AJ Cowley, New Plymouth District Council, Taranaki Reginal Council, iwi, the Taranaki Tree Trust, and the community.
A three year timetable was developed and the project was launched in 2004. It began with with weed control and the fencing of more than 1500 metres of riparian margins to exclude stock from neighbouring farms. Over 6000 native trees were planted by more than 800 community volunteers during three very successful community planting days in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
The Herekawe Walkway Link Grand Opening was celebrated in January 2007. It marked the culmination of a four year commitment to this unique community project. A television documentary was filmed to showcase the project as a successful example of team work between industry, councils and the community to enhance their local environment. A subsequent grant from the TSB Community Trust allowed bridges to be built over stream crossings to ensure an all-weather surface for the walkway.
Peringa Park Wetland Creation Project
In 2009 the Taranaki Tree Trust provided support to the Peringa Park wetland creation project. In 2008 New Plymouth District Council created a new wetland alongside Lake Rotomanu at the mouth of the Waiwhakaiho River. The aim was to prevent flooding, provide help during drought conditions, and act as a collection point for stormwater from Fitzroy for natural cleaning before it flowed into the lake. Funding for 2500 native plants was provided by the Taranaki Tree Trust via the Honda NZ TreeFund. A community planting day was organised and attended by 50 volunteers. St John Bosco school 'adopted' the wetland and were involved in its constuction and maintenance. The St John Bosco students use the wetland as a learning source for their classroom programmes.
Hutiwai Whitebait Habitat Protection Project
In 2008 -2009 the Taranaki Tree Trust provided support to the Hutiwai Whitebait Habitat Protection project. Funding for 1300 native plants was provided via the Honda NZ TreeFund. This fencing and planting project was initiated by local landowners to limit stream-bank erosion, exclude stock, and provide habitat for whitebait along the Hutiwai Stream, a tributary of the lower Tongaporutu River. The Tongaporutu River and its tributaries provide important habitat for whitebait and shade allows the whitebait to spawn effectively. The Taranaki Tree Trust organised community planting days which were attended by locals, whitebaiters, and staff from the Trust, the TRC, and the Department of Conservation.
